Who was the former undisputed heavyweight American world champion boxer? And was also the youngest person ever to win a heavy weight title at age 20? He boxed from 1985 to 2005 and was one of the most celebrated athletes ever.
“I never saw my mother happy with me and proud of me for doing something: she only knew me as being a wild kid running the streets, coming home with new clothes that she knew I didn’t pay for. I never got a chance to talk to her or know about her. Professionally, it has no effect, but it’s crushing emotionally and personally.”
He married Robin Givens in 1988 and one year and one week later they divorced on Feb 14, 1989. That’s right Valentine’s Day.
Forward to 1992. This is when what happened made him do a 180 at the airport in Chile. And on that day, “notorious boxer Mike Tyson rapes Desiree Washington, a contestant in the Miss Black America pageant, in an Indianapolis, Indiana hotel room. At a time when the issue of date rape was entering the country’s consciousness, Tyson’s attack became a national sensation.” as reported by History. “In a rape case that has attracted worldwide attention and prompted debate about sexual roles and racial attitudes in the criminal justice system, Mr. Tyson is likely to be freed in three years with time off for good behavior.” reported by The New York Times.
Fast forward to yesterday: Mike Tyson was barred from entering Chile to attend an awards ceremony for action films in Santiago, Chile. Here’s why:
“The former world heavyweight champion was planning to attend an awards ceremony for action films taking place in Chile’s capital Santiago. Police posted a photo of Tyson walking in an airport with two cops. They said: “Detectives from the International Police are re-boarding Mike Tyson for not complying with immigration law. “Upon review of his record, and as authorised by current immigration law, all foreigners who have been convicted or prosecuted for any crime may have their entry into the country impeded.” as reported by The Sun.
And further, it has been discovered that this is not the first time this has happened to Mike Tyson, it happened in 2013 when he was denied entry to Britain.
With all of the scandalous accusations flying around today … a lesson learned from Mike would go a long way. Do you remember his scandal 25 years ago? If you do, drop a comment below and tell us what you thought back then.
