Per AP reports, President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration Saturday for a large area of Louisiana. He also ordered federal assistance for the state, according to a White House statement.
Hurricane Nate is listed as a Category 1 storm but appears to be gaining intensity as it approaches land, which has sparked the White House’s decision.
According to the reports, the order identifies 17 parishes along coastal Louisiana and authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate all federal disaster relief efforts. This will hopefully speed aid, save lives and protect property and public safety in the region.
The Governor of Louisiana released a statement on Facebook soon after the announcement:
“I appreciate the speed and decisiveness with which President Trump granted our Pre-Disaster Emergency Declaration request in anticipation of (Hurricane) Nate making landfall along our coast. This declaration will help us continue the process of preparing for potential severe weather with the support of federal resources at our disposal.”
President Trump has received nation-wide praise from both sides of the aisle after several hurricanes have put him and his administration to the test this year. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are in the path of Hurricane Nate.
