After Pardoning Joe Arpaio, former Sheriff of Maricopa County, AZ , who was convicted of Contempt of Court and was awaiting sentencing at the age of 85, President Trump is all set on Tuesday to make his second historic Presidential Pardon. The Presidential Pardoning power is bestowed upon President’s and can include a complete expungement of the conviction as if it never happened or can do as little as reducing a sentence imposed by the courts. The President has the power. Who will POTUS be pardoning on Tuesday afternoon?
Well, we don’t know WHO it will be but we can divulge that they are American and from the State of Minnesota. As reported by the Star Tribune, the two brother’s were actually reared together on a farm in rural Alexandria by second generation farmer’s, Carl and Sharlene Wittenburg. Bow, the smaller brother has all the personality and likes Country Music. Tunes from Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are his favorite, and he is more the leader of the pack. His brother, Tie, although much larger in stature is more of a follower as reported by their foster parent, Kodi Bundermann, a Douglas County 4-H chapter volunteer. She said of the two brother’s fate, “Only one will get the pardon, however, with the other standing by in case of an accident or barnyard scandal. Which (jail) bird gets picked will be decided by the White House.”
In case you have not figured out yet, these two are REAL Turkey’s! And they will be driven cross country to D.C. for their Pardon, “they’ll travel by truck in carriers emblazoned with the “Seal of the National Turkey of the United States,” said Carl Wittenburg, National Turkey Federation Chairman. So, if you happen to see it make sure and give them a wave!
Please see the video below for a day in the life of Bow and Tie:
Once the two are safely in D.C., they will head to the White House Rose Garden! There, they will meet with President Trump and the ceremony shall begin. The pardoned bird and his ‘wingman’ will live out their final resting days at the Virginia Tech’s “Gobblers Rest” exhibit nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains! Below is a photo of their new surroundings and they will join “Tater and Tot” from last years padon:
The Turkey’s will be living at the “Gobbler’s Nest” throughout the two year life expectancy. If you want to visit the Turkey’s or just keep track of their Journey see #PresidentialTurkey2017. Watch the video below:
It is often stated that President Lincoln’s 1863 clemency to a turkey recorded in an 1865 dispatch by White House reporter Noah Brooks was the origin for the pardoning ceremony, who noted, “a live turkey had been brought home for the Christmas dinner, but [Lincoln’s son Tad] interceded in behalf of its life. . . . [Tad’s] plea was admitted and the turkey’s life spared.”
And to ward off future rumors and misleading information, the Presidential Pardon of the Turkey’s Tie and Bow should not be confused with the meeting POTUS held with Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan! Please enjoy the video below of the President of the United States with the Turkey President.
