Key West, Florida in Monroe County is the southernmost point of the United States. It is best known ,not only, for their Key Limes, Cheeseburgers In Paradise and great music but also for the famous Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum where 54 six-toed cats rode out the storm with 10 of their caretakers.
It is said that some of the polydactyl cats are descendants of Hemingway’s cat named Snow White given to him by a ship’s captain. We have not heard how they fared; however, with 18” thick limestone walls built in 1851 that has withstood vicious Hurricanes in the past- we believe they are all okay.
Key West was slammed by Irma with winds from 37mph to 99 mph per the NOAA probability chart. Power is knocked out and resident’s who stayed are encouraged to boil thier drinking water. The surging sea water is making mini lakes out of the streets. Bridges must be approved before travelling is possible and the Airports must also be checked out before anyone can come in or out.

The good news is Supplies and Airborne Rescue team will soon be on their way. Monroe County Emergency Management Director Martin Senterfitt has ordered an Air Force Operations team to assess the condition of Key West International and Florida Keys Marathon airports.
Once the airports are cleared, flights containing humanitarian supplies can begin to arrive in the Florida Keys via Monroe County BOCC.
